An Environmental Riddle

This is something my mom is doing that is confusing me environmentally. She is burning wood in our fire place to heat up the house. It is saving money on our electricity bill, but it is putting carbon back into the atmosphere. Is burning wood better of worse for the environment that electricity use?

  1. oh boy, that is a very interesting question!
my walking lexicon aka biologist boyfriend says that if you have the choice between traditionally produced electricity and wood, the wood is the more sustainable choice. it's different if you could build a waterwheel or sth like that. I think from traditional electricity solar power is the most green, but producing the panels apparently is including lots of carbon emissions and toxic materials...
    here's one back:
what's better (or rather: what's the smaller evil): tetra pack or PET?

  2. btw: i just took two footpring quizzes simultaneously, and they gave me completely different results! wwf says im using 2 earths, myfootprint says 0.49 earth... i felt like the latter asks more detailed questions, but wwf includes more parts of your life. not sure what to think anymore...maybe i just screwed one of them up... maybe you wanna try that too, then we could see if it's the same with you?
